The chill of a predawn ocean breeze swept across the sand as I made my way over the dunes and onto the South Carolina beach last week. The only sound—the rhythmic rippling of gentle waves breaking along the shoreline.

Alone in the darkness, dwarfed, and awed by the anticipated majesty of this morning concert ready to fill the heavens with God’s created light, I waited. But for the moment the clouds, the sand, and the ocean were smoky gray.DSCF3287

Dull. Flat. Lifeless.

I snapped the first photo.

DSCF3291A tinge of blue washed across the expanse above my head, scattering the remnants of darkness like pulled strands of cotton candy.

Gray clouds soaked up the coming lights of heaven and reflected the soon-to-be seen splendor of the sun’s march to the line between sea and sky.DSCF3306 Like turning up the rheostat of a chandelier from dimmer to lighter and brighter, the intensity of tone grew deeper and more brilliant in hue. The multiplicity of the palette increased as streaks of golden light radiated across the heavens.DSCF3337

Until the ordained moment the fiery sphere split the horizon.

My heart thrilled and my mind flew back to the descriptions in Ezekiel’s first ten chapters when this prophet saw the brilliance of the glory of God leaving the temple. Could the glow of the sunrise each morning be a tiny reminder from God to us of the miraculous glory of who He is?DSCF3343

The shutter of my camera clicked again and again and again as the sea mirrored the ever-changing prisms of sunlight showering onto the tide pools, wave crests, and beach sand.DSCF3352 At this moment creatures of His creation responded. Pelicans and seagulls winged their way to and fro over the ocean. Porpoise played along the shallows. Birds trilled their praise and people ran along the sand while the crescendo of the sun’s melodious journey continued high into the heavens.

Just a glimpse of the glory that will come when King Jesus splits the eastern sky. And God’s Son will rule and reign from David’s throne in Jerusalem and our anthem of praise will glorify God’s name forever.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1 NKJ).

But before the sun’s light touched the heavens, the clouds, the sand, and the sea, were drab and colorless. Just like us. Smudged. Lifeless. Dead.

“…because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, so that they are without excuse, because although they knew God they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:19-21 NKJ).DSCF3445

Until we return and repent, allowing the Lord Jesus Christ to rule and reign in our heart. Only then can the Holy Spirit illuminate our life enabling each one of us to reflect the brilliant light of His absolute truth and His amazing grace and love to a lost, deceived, and dying world.

The sun, the moon, and the stars rejoice to give God glory and run their appointed course day and night. What about me? What about you? Do we? Or are we so absorbed by the busy chaos of this world we miss God’s appointed course for our life?

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20 NKJ).
